The Feast of Pentecost

Dear Friends in Christ,

Happy Feast Day of Pentecost! On this day, the Church concludes the Easter Season, fifty days after the day of Our Lord’s Resurrection. On this day, we celebrate the beginning of the Church as the apostles and Mary receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and the power to preach the Gospel to every nation of the world. Because of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, which we receive at our Baptism and our Confirmation, we are given all the graces necessary to fulfill our vocation to holiness, and we are given the courage to share our faith in our daily lives. I

n this third week of our series of Marian apparitions, I invite us to take a journey to Ireland, a country that has been a cradle to Catholicism for centuries, and discover the apparition of Our Lady of Knock. This apparition occurred on the night of August 21st, 1879 when the housekeeper of a local parish, Mary McLoughlin, discovered a mysterious light that was coming from the nearby parish exterior wall. It was pouring rain outside, but even in the rain, Mary noticed three figures that were illuminated by a strange light. She quickly ran to tell her friend, Margaret Byrne.

After relating the story to Margaret, Mary returned to the parish church and discovered that the image was still visible on the wall. She noticed that the three figures were the Blessed Mother, with St. Joseph to her right, and St. John the Evangelist to her left. Close to St. John, the image appeared of an altar with a lamb upon it and a cross behind it. Above, angels were worshiping the lamb in awe. None of the figures spoke a word, but remained voicelessly visible in the pouring rain.

Eventually, word spread quickly of the apparition, and soon 15 people were praying the rosary in the pouring rain, each ranging from 6 to 75 years old. Each of them were able to perfectly describe the image in detail, and they all attested that not a word was spoken. The next day, these men and women went to the parish priest and related to him what had happened the previous evening. As time passed, the Church approved the authenticity of the vision, and devotion to Our Lady of Knock spread quickly. Today, thousands of pilgrims visit this holy site to ask for favors from Our Lady. May she be a consolation amidst darkness of sin in our lives.

May Christ’s Peace be with you,

Fr. Briggs
