40 Hours Devotion

Come and pray with Our Lord in celebration of Saint Philip!

We are hosting the Devotion of 40 Hours here at the Parish from April 30th until May 2nd, the day before the Feast of Saint Philip. During this time we will have Eucharistic Adoration continuously.

Adoration will begin the evening of Sunday, April 30th and end on Tuesday, May 2nd. We will have a Mass in honor of Saint Philip at 7:00pm, followed by a party immediately after!

We need help to make this Devotion in honor of Saint Philip a success!

  • We need people to sign up for hour-long shifts from Sunday through Tuesday, so that we always have someone with Jesus as He remains on the Altar.
  • We also need people to bring food to the party on May 2nd.

Come and join us for this great event in honor of Saint Philip!

Why Should I Spent an Hour in Adortion?

Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta said, "The time you spend with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the best time you will spend on earth. Each moment that you spend with Jesus will deepen your union with Him and make your soul everlastingly more glorious and beautiful in Heaven, and will help bring about everlasting peace on earth."

Frequently Asked Questions About 40 Hours

Is this like the Adoration we do on First Fridays?

It’s exactly like that! Come to pray, just as we do on First Fridays, in the days leading up to Saint Philip’s Feast day!

Why is it called 40 Hours?

Traditionally, the Parish would enjoy 40 Hours of Adoration over several days. Parishes still call the Devotion “40 Hours”, even if you do not have exactly 40 hours.

I have never prayed in Adoration before. What do I do?

The simple answer is just talk to Jesus! Spend some time in quiet prayer while offering to your God what is on your mind and heart. We also will have some handy guides available to help you pray.

I like to read. Can I read during Adoration?

If you would like! We will have plenty of reading material you can borrow as you pray.

What if I keep falling asleep? Or get hungry?

Never fear! We will have coffee, soda and cookies available as long as Adoration is going on. Feel free to take a few minutes and enjoy some refreshments, chat with friends and fuel up on caffeine before you continue your prayers. All snacks will be available in Room 5.

Did you say Cookies?!?!?!

Yes!!!!!

I notice that Adoration goes through the night. Who goes to Adoration during the middle of the night?

While it might seem odd to pray in the middle of the night, the practice is actually as old as the Church herself. Jesus Christ frequently rose before the sunrise to pray in the dark. Following His example, Christians everywhere since the time of the Apostles have risen in the middle of the night to spend time in prayer. Even today the practice of “praying in the wee hours” continues in Parishes all over the country.

For those who earnestly desire to spend time with God, the practice makes a great deal of sense. There are fewer distractions at night, and so God can more easily speak to us in our mind and heart. Praying in the silence of God's love during the quiet of night is an experience like no other. Every single Christian should make a Holy Hour during the night at least once in their life.

I know that sometimes Confessions are offered during 40 Hours. Are we doing that here?

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer Confession during 40 Hours this year. However, we do have Confessions the day before 40 Hours begins. We encourage those who want to go to Confession to take advantage of the Sacrament on Saturday, April 29 at 4:00pm or 7:00pm
